Peacherino Monthly 2!

Peacherino monthly

Current events

Do me a favor.  Imagine everything you own.  EVERYTHING.  Houses, clothing, personal items...everything down to the very clothes on your body.  Where would we be without these things?  Have you ever asked yourself that question?  Chances are, if you have, it is not a thought that crosses your mind very often, if at all.  Now, back to imagining.  So imagine all your stuff.  Now picture this: all of it is violently destroyed and blown away in the course of 40 seconds.  You are left with NOTHING (no, not even your own clothes.)  Now, you may be thinking: "Oh, I know! You're talking about the Apocalypse, the end of the earth!" Well, in a sense you're right.  But actually, I was picturing a TORNADO.

What is a tornado?  It is a hellish spiral of vicious wind sweeping around in a loose circle, wreaking havoc every second of its existence.  Usually large black clouds dipping towards the earth and the sound of wailing sirens will alert you to "get the heck inside!"  Wikipidia defines a tornado like this:

A tornado is a violent, dangerous, rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud. They are often referred to as a twister or a cyclone, although the word cyclone is used in meteorology in a narrower sense, only to name hurricanes or typhoons. Tornadoes come in many shapes and sizes, but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris and dust. Most tornadoes have wind speeds less than 110 miles per hour (177 km/h), are approximately 250 feet (80 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. The most extreme can attain wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than two miles (3 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km).

More imagining!  Picture 300 of these beasts touching down in only nine states (equally distributed, that's about 33.333333 tornados per state.) Now, 300 tornadoes is not a whole lot if they occur over the course of a year, but what if these storms were to only fill in the slot of a month?  Hey, guess what?  We're not imagining anymore!  This is TRUE.  280 deaths have been confirmed thus far in the states of Alabama, the Carolinas, Indiana, IllinoisGeorgia, Virginia, Tennessee, and Mississippi.  ALL THIS MONTH!  This is one of the greatest tornado outbreaks in American history.  It has devastated entire cities.  ENTIRE CITIES.  One of the largest tornadoes this month was in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  It was on the ground for over 213 miles!  That is destruction of epic proportions.  Crippling blows have also been dealt to the Carolinas.  The President had declared a number of disaster zones, and has promised federal help.  Emergency equipment, crews, supplies, and volunteers are needed...as is prayer.  This month and beyond, please pray that God would use this horrible situation to bring glory to Himself.  Please ask Him continually to heal the broken, restore the destroyed, comfort the grieved, and aid the crushed.  These devastated people, touched by this disaster need help...we can help.

Acts 9:1-22

1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”
   “Yes, Lord,” he answered.
11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”
15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”
17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
Saul in Damascus and Jerusalem
Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. 20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. 21 All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?” 22 Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.

I love this story! It just goes to show how God can use anyone, including prosecutors!

Bible challenge for the month

Are you willing to do what God wants you to do? Think about it. Ananias had to do something that took a lot of courage; go to the person who was prosecuting Christians! Is there someone you’re scared to stand up to? A bully, etc.?
If you do something courageous this month, let us know! (contacts at the bottom)

Featured Story: Good News Concerning NFL Lockout

On April 27, 2011, Judge Nelson issued a 20 page decision denying the NFL's request to put a stop to NFL activities for 2011, and possibly even lockout the season.  The issue refuted every one of the NFL's arguments.  Here is what www.NFLLockout.com had to say about the decision:

Last night, Judge Nelson issued a 20 page decision denying the NFL’s request to stay (delay) the injunction she issued on Monday in the Brady v. NFL litigation that the NFL must stop the lockout.  The decision denying the stay is once again very strong, and rejected all of the NFL’s arguments.  Accordingly, the order ending the lockout is in full, immediate force.
The NFL has filed for an emergency stay with the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, while the Eighth Circuit considers the NFL’s stay request. Unless and until such a request is granted, however, we believe the 2011 League Year now has to begin; the Clubs must open their facilities to allow players to work out, meet with coaches and otherwise perform their jobs; and the NFL and the Clubs cannot collectively continue to refuse to deal with players.  It is our view that the NFL and the Clubs will be in contempt of court if they do not comply with the order unless and until they hear differently from the Eighth Circuit.  We will let you know later today what the NFL is going to do to comply with this order, and what the specific schedule will be going forward.

Thus, there is hope for a 2011 season yet.  All is not lost.  Will keep you updated

Books to check out

Girlz of God – Talia DeAndrea

“This is a Girls devotional that talks about lots of struggles in a girl’s life. The author, Talia, is a fun teenager who is an AMAZING writer! I would recommend this book to any girl!”

The Duck That Wasn’t Really A Duck – Kara Siert

The Duck That Wasn't Really a Duck is such a great book! I loved it and was "hooked"! I couldn't wait to find out what happened at the end. This book was very well-written, and I love how it talks about forgiveness, friendship, being truly sorry, compassion, and God! This is a GREAT book - a must-read!

-Talia DeAndrea-

Through Gates of Splendor – Elisabeth Elliot

“This is a great book, written by a Christian who followed Gods calling. She, her husband, and two other couples moved to the jungles of Ecuador. They try and communicate with a tribe of Indians, the Auca, and tell them about God. With lots of twists, turns, and tragedies, this is an exciting, wonderful read!”

Scientist of the month
Ken Ham

Creation scientist Kenneth Alfred Ham (or Ken Ham, as he is often called) was born on October 20th, 1951. He is the Australian President/CEO of Answers in Genesis USA. I grew familiar with Answers in Genesis while watching some of their videos in my Creation Science class at our homeschool co-op, and they have given me a wider and better view of Biblical science and more evidence that the Bible is true. Wikipedia states that "Ham
completed his bachelor’s degree in applied science (with an emphasis on environmental biology) from the Queensland Institute of Technology in Australia. He also holds a diploma of education from the University of Queensland (a graduate qualification necessary for Ham to begin his initial career as a science teacher in the public schools in Australia)." In 1994, with the assistance of the now-called Creation Ministries International (Australia), Ham and his colleagues Mark Looy and Mike Zovath set up Creation Science Ministries, which was later renamed the familiar Answers in Genesis we all know. The Answers in Genesis web site, www.answersingenesis.org, states that "Answers in Genesis is a catalyst to bring reformation by reclaiming the foundations of our faith which are found in the Bible, from the very first verse." As I have learned from watching many Answers in Genesis videos, the ministry is dedicated to showing scientific evidence that the Bible is true, and also to giving foundational references when challenged in our faith by others. We want to be able to stand strong in our faith and have answers for what we believe in. And, as Answers in Genesis believes, the Bible does have answers! Here are the Core Values of Answers in Genesis, stated on their web site:
  • We resourcefully equip believers to defend their faith with excellence
  • We willingly engage society’s challenges with uncompromising integrity.
  • We sacrificially serve the AiG family and others.
  • We generously give Christian love.
Here is a little more information on Ken Ham’s beliefs from Wikipedia:
"As a young Earth creationist, Ham believes that the entire
universe was created about 6,000 years ago and that Noah's flood occurred about 4,500 years ago. He believes that the small number of animals carried on Noah's ark could produce the biological diversity observed on Earth. Ham also believes that dinosaurs co-existed with modern humans. He supports this view primarily with Biblical scripture and makes the claim that he uses the same evidence that scientists use."
As Ken says many times in the AiG videos, creation scientists and evolution scientists all have the same evidence – we just interpret it differently. For example, if two people were looking at the same glass of water and one was wearing sunglasses, would their view be different, or the same?
Creation science is not only interesting, but it’s true, too! How do we know? Well, we have a holy Book that says so – written by God! So, of course it’s true!
